Bayeux, France: The otherwise quaint and delightful town of Bayeux in Normandy has a strange and decidedly un-quaint situation in the town center. In the footsteps of William the Conqueror, someone has put up public loudspeakers all over the place which blare Brian Adams and T.A.T.U. songs onto the sidewalk ... but why?

They do this because they are French. This is what French people do. You will find this phenomenon on ski lifts and any number of other places where silence would be far preferable.

There are similar outbreaks of barbarianism in French towns, like the siting of huge ugly hypermarkets in the most beautiful rural locations.

It's a mystery. It's an import of Americana, when most of France intellectuals (eg the Academie Francais) abhors transatlantic influences.
