Apple Stickers

Your grocery: Why in the world must almost every apple I find in the store come with an annoying sticker that must be picked off? Half the time I wind up with apple under my nails, and the other half of the time, the sticker get's stuck to my fingers and is a nusaince to throw away, especially if I'm off hiking somewhere.

How much wasted money and energy goes into slapping these things on anyway? Pure Muda.

Well, the reason behind the apple stickers is that each sticker has a numeric code so the poor grocery attendant knows whether to charge you for Jonagold, Macintosh, Fuji, or whatever apples.

Of course the formidable downside of all this is that besides your observed fingernail problem and a wallet covered in apple stickers - if you don't rinse the apple you're eating the adhesive. Bleah! Even my local "organic market" stickers their produce. A shame.

Besides shopping at local farmer's markets where the propietors can actually tell the different apples apart - or better training the clerks (!), a better solution might be find some way to tag the stem or some inedible part of the apple - or perhaps a band of some sort like you find on a head of lettuce that is wrapped around the fruit but doesn't use adhesive. The band could be removed and recycled at the counter. I'd pay an extra few cents a pound for that.

Never ever get the sticker wet. It starts to disintegrate and then you have a real mess and end up eating small parts of it.
We keep our apple stickers on our tap in the kitchen. It's a nice record of how many apples are eaten in a day, but we rarely reach our 5-a-day target.

Judging from the time you posted note I strongly suggest you stop drinking before you attempt to revove the stickers.
Also, try to get to bed earlier.
Also, is that your biggest problem?

Why do they have to put the sticker where I want to take a bite? Put it right by the stem so I can easily eat around it.

At least it's relatively easy to remove, unlike the wax used to make them shiny, enticing you with their (artificial) lustre.

I agree, put the sticker on the stem. That makes the most sense.
