Wetland Filtration in a Box

Category: Environment , Urban Planning

Milwaukee: The Alterra coffee house on Milwaukee's lakefront has created a tiny artificial wetland to filter runoff from the shop's parking lot. Water from the lot flows through a variety of plants, and then into a plastic bin full of additional plants and micro-organisms. It's looking a little dead in this photo (taken last week in mid-winter) but I'm told it works extremely well, naturally breaking down most of the soot and oil that flows off the lot.

Additionally brilliant is Alterra's rehabilitation of the old Milwaukee River flushing station to create the lakefront coffee house.
