Santa Monica: Polluted stormwater runoff is a far bigger problem than people realize. The Santa Monica Urban Runoff Recycling Facility is the first project of its kind designed to treat dry weather runoff and return it to the city as irrigation water, or greywater use.

Still, it's only part of the solution. Permeable pavement, and other "green" solutions will probably be needed in conjuction with projects like SMURRF to really clean things up especially when it rains.
