London: Crossrail is a massive project that will dig two deep rail tunnels under London. One will run east to west, the other will run on a diagonal from SW to NE. As it now stands, crossing London takes about an hour by the fastest means. Crossrail will make it more like 15 minutes, and the Heathrow Express will be able to go all the way to Canary Wharf.

The bad news: Phase one won't be completed until at least 2012, by which time jet-packs will probably be in widespread use, but if not, London will suddenly be a lot more convenient.
