Scottsdale, AZ: The design of Foothills Academy Prep School, also notable for being one of the largest straw-bale buildings ever constructed, includes a preserved desert wash in front of the school.
Typically, small waterways have been buried or lined with concrete, but keeping them intact, is not only asthetically nicer, but typically reduces the risk of flooding by slowing water flow. In this case it's also a great educational oppurtunity for kids as they cross the bridge over the wash every day when entering the school.
