Golden Gate Bridge Weekday Cycling Rules

Category: Cycling

gg_bike.jpg San Francisco: The Golden Gate Bridge has some peculiar cycling rules. On weekends, when leisure traffic is heavy, Bikes are restricted to the West side of the bridge, while pedestrians (most of them camera toting tourists) are restricted to the East. This makes perfect sense since most of the cyclists are off on a cruise, and this spares them the inconvience of stopping while hapless tourists stagger around taking pictures. Likewise, the tourists are spared the irritation of being nearly pegged by Lance Armstrong wannabes.

However, on weekdays, the West side is closed for most of the day and traffic is forced to be mixed on the East side, which leads to slow speeds and many near collisions between bikes and tourists. I can't think of any good reason why this is the case.
