Forced Power Cord Evolution

Category: Design

Laptops: I've generally been a big fan of Dell computers, but having just purchased my third Dell laptop, I can help but be infuriated by a small detail. Dell's insistence on changing the shape of the AC power cord with every new model is just plain rude. There's no reason other than a sneaky profit motive for Dell not to keep the same AC power cord year after year. Laptops may evolve but power cords don't.

damn that sucks, I was pleasantly surprised when the cords of my two dells purchased 2 years apart matched up, but I guess it can't last... Hoping Apple comes out with a hi res laptop by my next purchase anyway.

There is a larger stupidity here too, the fact that electronics manufacturers can't come up with a broad standard for portable power cords in general. Love to be able to use someone's Sony cord in a pinch, not to mention charge my cell phone off my laptop cord.

Not to mention that if there was a genuine standard, it would be possible to buy a new one for 50 cents, rather than whatever heinous amount of money the manufacturer chooses to charge.

The company I work for has had to change the power cords for the new products so that they meet new regulations for power cords used in medical environments (ie. a computer used in a doctors office.)

We sure don't WANT to change all our inventory and product codes. It's the regulations.
