Milwaukee: An astonishing amount of material is landfilled every year from demolition sites. This is not only wasteful and potentially hazardous, it's also an often overlooked business opportunity. A couple in Milwaukee demonstrates that you can avoid the hassel of trucking unwanted materials to the landfill and make a few bucks in the process. More than 95% of salvagable materials were reused and everyone breathes easier.

There are a number of companies doing this on a larger scale, such as San Francisco's Building REsources who have taken the concept of a salvage yard to an artistic level.

As disposal regulations become more strict, and as manufacturers (hopefully) begin designing more products with reuse in mind, we may see the day when the very idea of sending building materials to a landfill is sacrelige.
