Commuter Centers

Category: Transit

Waukesha, WI: It's obvious that shops and other businesses benefit by being near a popular transit stop, but can the opposite effect work? Officials are planning to add shops and other services to existing and planned "Park and Ride" bus terminals outside Milwaukee. [See Business Journal Article]

The idea is to make riding the bus more attractive by letting people get daily errands done as part of their commute. Frankly, it sound's like a pretty good plan. Of course, the bottom line is probably still going to be whether the transit itself is efficient, which is often dubious with busses sharing the same gridlocked freeway as cars, but it can't hurt!

Why not put some apartments within walking distance, as well? The residents, businesses, and transit would all help each other.
