Long Beach, CA: Free internet access is getting even easier as Long Beach becomes one of the first cities to offer a Wi-Fi area downtown to anyone with a properly equipped computer. [NYtimes article]
This is great news for internet users and will probably do good things for Long Beach, an often overlooked city, for a pretty tiny investment of $2500 a year. In my opinion, it's a great expenditure.
Hopefully, free access areas like this will become more common, eventually winning out over costly 'pay-per-use' schemes. In the meantime, try The Wireless Node Database.

Just a note that Brisbane, Australia also has a free Wi-Fi internet access in place in the city centre. It started off as a trial, but has now been extended indefinitely.
