More on Green Roofs

The City: Continuing the discussion on Green Roofs, here is an interesting article from Metropolis mentioning two more interesting benefits that go beyond the building itself: Reduced ambient summer temperature, thus less need for air-conditioning, and in turn less energy usage for the whole city; significant runnoff reduction lessening the burden on the city's storm sewer system.

I have a flat roofed house in New Mexico and was thinking that there might be applications for "green" roofs in desert climates, but haven't seen anything on it. Is anyone exploring this?
