Decent Gas Mileage

Europe: This is the Opel Station wagon, don't remember the model, Diesel powered and a completely basic, but quite adequate automobile. I drove around in it for a week in Austria and covered about 1000km, which despite the cost of gasoline ran me a tab of less than $40. That's around 40-45 miles per gallon, and considering the load it was carrying and the mountain roads I was on, totally incredible! But in Europe it's actually a basic and ordinary car, and you can easily do better. People in Europe just make mileage a higher priority I guess.
In the US, people think good gas mileage starts at 25mpg. What are we smoking?
(note - the diesel helped the mileage a lot, and isn't so easy to come by)

Thats good mileage, but Diesels pollute a lot more than gas engines. I wouldn't drive a diesel due to the damage it would do to my lungs.
