The Human Footprint

Category: Environment

EARTH: I just discovered a really remarkable set of maps produced by the Wildlife Conservation Society and Columbia University. They are entitled "The Human Footprint" and basically map out the direct physical impact that Humans have had on the planet. Bottom line is over 80% of the planet's land surface is under direct human influence, meaning it's urban, farmed, or otherwise affected by humanity.

The maps are fascinating to look at, and by no means preachy or depressing. They simply illustrate the few large areas of true wilderness left and make it clear that it is our choice as to what we want to do with them.

Have a look.
