River Surfing

Category: Wildcard

MUNICH: Yes, that guy is surfing on a river. Not only that, but he's in the middle of Munich. This guy wins the grand prize for innovation.

Actually, this is a daily activity on this particular tributary of the river Isar, which runs extremely fast due to it's proximity to the Alps. The water is flowing out of an underground section and the wave is permanent. Apparantly, this is extremely difficult and many cocky newcomers have been humbled instantly on their first attempts.

I live in Tennessee, and have been surfing at a couple of spots here for two years. It is definately difficult, it is almost like mixing surfing and snowboarding. Took a while to get used to.

I witnessed this phenomena last weekend in Munich. There were about 8 guys taking turns some managing to stay on the wave for 5 minutes at a time. Amazing.
